What Does Being a Good Man Imply?

Published on: 27th January, 2020

The most ignored attribute of good men in Scripture

As a youth and a believer, I (Sebastien) had a strong desire to become a good man. To that end, I believed that I could develop into one by:

  1. Going to church
  2. Doing good unto others
  3. Being a good husband and father
  4. Working hard
  5. Being a servant-leader, etc.

Of course, these are all good things. However, what I didn’t know was that they are only part of the equation for the biblical definition of a good man.

Furthermore, the Bible mostly tells us that we humans aren’t good.

In Mark 10:18, Jesus said to the rich young ruler:

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.”

Which resonates with another well-known passage, which is Romans 3:12:

“They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”

But, conversely, there are other passages which hint that goodness can be a human trait, such as Luke 6:45, where Jesus says:

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good.”

And in Acts 11: 24, we read about Barnabas:

“he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.”

So which is it? Is there such a thing as a good man? And what does it take to be one?

Today, we’ll look at the biblical definition of a good man, and the answer to our title “What Does Being a Good Man Imply?” Might surprise you.

Memorable Quotes:

“If you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”

~ Abraham Lincoln

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.”

~ Proverbs 13:22

“Righteousness is not only being saved, sanctified, and righteous spiritually - it also includes bearing fruit in every sphere of your life - including financially.”

“Many Christians, unfortunately, have often taken the good steward approach of saving a penny rather than making a penny.”

“God doesn’t send significant growth and blessing where there is poor management.”

“Everybody thinks Joseph got promoted to work for Pharaoh because of his gift for interpreting dreams, but at the end of the day, it was Joseph’s obvious administrative abilities that got him promoted in Potiphar’s house, in jail, and that got him named Prime Minister of Egypt.”

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” ~ Proverbs 11:25

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” ~ Luke 6:38

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” ~ 2 Corinthians 9:8

“Generosity should be the calling card of the financially successful believer.”

“I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners.” ~ Ecclesiastes 5:13-14

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

~ Matthew 6:19-21

“Believers are to be rivers of righteousness, not ponds of selfishness.”

“Some believers I know prefer dreamingly longing for heaven than belonging to heaven, acting on its behalf, and impacting the earth. They pride themselves in being grounded in Christ, and yet their heads are in the clouds. Their feet are on the ground, and yet they want nothing to do with walking or influencing this world.”

“Some people are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good.” ~ Oliver Wendell

“For things to change, you’ve got to change. For you to change, you have to think thoughts you’ve never thought, do things you’ve never done, and ally yourself with people you’ve never met.”

Would you like to become an Entrepreneur?

We help today’s believers by helping them to grow in all spheres of their lives… including their finances and business.

Now, how wealthy does God want you to be? Does He want you to be a multi-millionaire? Not necessarily. But God definitely wants you to have more than enough.

2 Corinthians 9:8 in the New Living Bible reads like this:

“God can give you all you need. He will give you more than enough. You will have everything you need for yourselves. And you will have enough left over to give when there is a need.”

More than enough means God delights in the following:

  • You having no financial debt.
  • You having more than enough money to fulfill every Kingdom assignment He has for you.
  • You having more than enough left over to help others fulfill their Kingdom assignment.

Now, if what we said here today resonates with you, we have a proposition for you.

Most financial experts today agree that in order to create wealth in today’s economy, you need at least 5 streams of income.

The reality, however, is that most people have 2 or 3 max.

So...

  • If you want to get acquainted with a great extra stream of income
  • If you desire to leave an inheritance to your children’s children
  • If you desire to bear more than just spiritual fruit
  • If you want to stop commuting and work from home
  • If you want to help more people
  • If you desire better things for yourself and your family
  • If you want more time freedom to spend on things that matter

We believe God wants you to bear fruit for His glory, for your well-being, for your prosperity, for your family, for your legacy, for your testimony, and for His kingdom to expand further.

Remember, God is looking… for a few good men (a few good women)! The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few!

We are looking for believers who care about changing their situation. We are looking for people who don’t want to just get by anymore. We are looking for people who want things to change!
